Sam Oh, Professor of Sungkyunkwan University in South Korea, Visited our School

From May 13th to May 15th, 2019, Professor Sam Oh, President of the iSchool Alliance and Professor in the Department of Data Science at Sungkyunkwan University in Korea, came to our school for inspection and communication, and initially reached a cooperation willingness on the matter of joining the global iSchool alliance.

iSchool is an interdisciplinary organization established in 2003 by the Information college/Information school. Currently, 100 global information colleges, business schools, and computer colleges join the organization. There are six Chinese universities with successful application, which are Wuhan University, Peking University, Nanjing University, Renmin University of China, Sun Yat-sen University and Huazhong Normal University.

On May 13th, from 16:00-17:30 pm, Professor Sam Oh and our teachers had a symposium on the theme of iSchool Application Discussion. Vice Dean Xiaomei Han, Peng Wu, and Professor Yuefen Wang, Li Li and some young teachers participated in the discussion. The symposium was hosted by Peng Wu and was reported by Associate Professor Houqiang Yu. During the meeting, Professor Sam Oh carefully examined the iSchool application prepared by our institute and put forward detailed revision suggestions to establish our confidence in the iSchool Alliance. Then, the participating teachers introduced their professional background and research direction in turn, and had an in-depth exchange with Professor Sam Oh.

On May 14th, from 9:00 to 11:30 am, Professor Sam Oh brought two wonderful lectures to our teachers and students. Teacher representatives and some undergraduate, master, and doctoral students attended the lecture. First of all, Professor Sam Oh gave a wonderful report on the theme of The iSchool Movement and What It Means to iProfessionals and iField. Participants followed Professor Sam Oh into the world of iSchool and learned about his organization, membership, and annual meeting. Professor Sam Oh, with his successful experience as a member of the iSchool Alliance, University of Washington and Sungkyunkwan University, emphasized the earth-shaking changes that have taken place in the development of the school after joining iSchools. The teachers and students presented their questions about iSchool's application requirements, received the patient answers from Professor Sam Oh, and further understood the necessity and importance of joining iSchool in our school.

The second lecture was entitled “An iSchool Approach to Data Science”, and Professor Sam explained this topic by taking the American Data Science Project (University of Washington, Syracuse University) and the Data Science Project of Sungkyunkwan University in Korea as an example. Among them, Sungkyunkwan University took the lead in setting up a bachelor's degree in data science in Korea, and set up a special professional course for the characteristics of the subject, leading the development of information science. Later, Professor Sam Oh also showed the development of Sungkyunkwan University and welcomed everyone to visit Sungkyunkwan University, hoping to form a friendly and cooperative relationship with Nanjing University of Science and Technology. Finally, Prof. Sam Oh communicated with the teachers and students present, and discussed issues such as school-enterprise cooperation and interdisciplinary student development. The lecture ended successfully in a relaxed and pleasant atmosphere.
